Comments: This rotary grater grates cheeses and other foods with two interchangeable stainless steel drums. One has larger holes for firm cheeses (such as cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, gouda), as well as carrots; the other has smaller holes for hard cheeses (Parmesan and Romano), as well as chocolate, nuts, ginger, nutmeg, etc.
The grater easily switches from right-hand to left-hand use. Its sturdiness surprised us, made with a chrome-plated die-cast aluminum press, stainless steel grating drums, non-slip Santoprene handle and knob (we don't know what Santoprene is, either), and a body made of "ultra-durable" plastic. The grater can be easily disassembled, and can be cleaned in the top rack of a dishwasher.
There is a little something we don't understand here, in that there is a shaker included that is supposed to attach directly to the drum, in which you can shred and store your gratings (or as we like to call them, raspings). We were finally able to attach the shaker successfully, but it took a lot of force and we almost gave up because we were afraid something would break. It didn't matter very much to us, because the instructions suggested only using it with the fine drum and only with dry food, and we, of course, want all or nothing. Nonetheless, you can scoop your grated food into the shaker if you want. It has a little cap, so you can store your food, and it seems to close pretty securely.
A criticism is that the grater's hopper is quite small, so you almost have to cube your cheese and load it fairly often. We have known people with smaller hands to have trouble getting enough leverage with some other rotary graters, however, so maybe the smaller hopper makes it easier for more people to use. If that is the case, we don't begrudge a little extra preliminary cutting. There is also some space between the body of the grater and the grating wheel, so a modest amount of ungrated cheese is left after you are finished cranking, and we are still considering whether or not we begrudge that.
OK, we looked it up and Santoprene is a trade name for a thermoplastic vulcanizate, a high performance elastomer that combines the best qualities of vulcanized rubber with the processing ease of thermoplastics. If we had known it was that cool, we'd have looked it up ages ago. What a world, huh?
