Comments: We totally understand the desire to use one tool that will perform two tasks, rather than dirtying two separate implements. (We can never quite manage it, but we totally understand the concept). That appears to be the goal here – a combination whisk and rubber spatula or scraper.
This whisk has an unusual design. Rather than curving from one side to the other as with most balloon whisks, each of the eight wires here is bent at a 90-degree angle before heading back to a position a quarter-way around the handle If you gently pry the wires apart, it is as if you are opening the petals of a flower. Four of the wires are slightly shorter and form an inside layer, and four are marginally longer. One section of each of the longer wires is coated in silicone. These silicone-coated edges are meant to work as a scraper on the inside of mixing bowls so you can scrape out every bit of whatever you're mixing, and also to allow you to work in a nonstick pan without damaging the surface.
Our test results were a little bit mixed. When working in a mixing bowl, the silicone edges dragged a bit if we hit the inside of the bowl, making it a little harder to whip cream or eggs. It is also possible with fearless whisking to scrape the nonstick surface of a pan with the tips of the wires. We didn't cause any damage to the nonstick surface, but we couldn't be sure that we wouldn't. There are whisks on the market with wires entirely encased in silicone; these might be more of a sure thing if your pans are quite delicate. Otherwise, it's a very serviceable whisk with a large, comfortable handle.
